There is a natural radioactive spring here Machadodorp and is reputed to have powerful healing qualities. Machadodorp is an important railway junction between Johannesburg and Nelspruit and is named after Joachim Machado, an engineer who surveyed the land for the proposed the Pretoria-Delagoa Bay railway line. During the Second Boer War Machadodorp was a temporary seat of the Transvaal Volksraad after they evacuated Pretoria in 1900.
